In August 2020, Edythe J. Hayes Middle School fully introduced the Academy Preparation Program.
The goal of this initiative is to offer exploratory courses aligned with the various high school special programs, career academies, or magnets schools, with the goal of assisting students to make the best choice for their high school career.
In addition, students could potentially leave middle school with as many as six high school credits, various industry certifications, and a growing portfolio of work.
The sixth grade year will be exploration, exposing students to courses in each track if possible. At the end of the sixth grade year, students will select their seventh grade courses based on their interests.
In seventh grade, students will enroll in longer, more intense courses designed to increase their knowledge in the subject area and prepare them for the eighth grade courses.
In eighth grade, students will enroll in semester or year-long courses. In these courses, students can earn industry certification or high school credit, depending on the course.
