Course Sequence Goal
By the end of this course, students will produce a portfolio that includes evidence of:
- Performance in three-four concerts per year (concert program)
- Completion of three-four adjudicated individual performances per year (Individual Performance Evaluation rubric)
- Completion of one adjudicated group performance per year (Group Performance Evaluation rubric)
- Post evaluation of each performed concert (written reflection)
- Post evaluation of adjudicated performances (written reflection with goal setting)
- Performance in at least one community outreach concert per year (concert program)
Sixth Grade Course Description
Course Description
Students will gain the skills needed to perform alone and in small and large groups- a wind or percussion instrument. They will have the technical skills and musical understanding to be independent musicians. By the end of this sequence of courses, students will:
- Play in keys Bb, Eb, Ab, F, and C Major
- Play in 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8, and 2/2 time signatures
- Play and demonstrate rhythmic values of whole, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes/rests, as well as play and demonstrate dotted quarter and dotted eighth notes.
- Perform legato, staccato, and marcato articulation styles
- Perform and describe the meaning of Presto, Allegro, Allegretto, Moderato, Andante, Largo, and Lento
- Perform and describe the meaning of pianissimo, piano, mezzo piano, mezzo forte, forte, and fortissimo
- Proficiently read music in their instrument’s clef, including symbols for notes, rhythms, articulations, and dynamics.
This course is one 36-weeks in length.

- MU: Pr4.2.6: a. Explain how understanding the structure and the elements of music are used in music selected for performance. b. When analyzing selected music, read and identify by name or function standard symbols for rhythm, pitch, articulation, and dynamics. c. Identify how cultural and historical context inform performances.
- MU: Pr4.3.6: Perform a selected piece of music demonstrating how their interpretations of the elements of music and the expressive qualities to convey intent
