To be placed in English 1, students must meet all of the following requirements:
- 90thpercentile or higher on two out of the last three universal scanners (MAP) in Reading
- Distinguished Writing Sample for Argumentation aligned with the Kentucky Scoring Guide for On-Demand Writing (This needs to be a sample from 7th grade language arts)
- Exceeds benchmark on College Career Readiness test
- A/B cumulative average grade in advanced language arts class for 7th grade
In addition, the student must maintain the following requirements in order to remain in the English 1 course:
- Maintain a grade of a B average (to be checked at each mid-term and end of quarter)
- Maintain 90th percentile or higher on fall and winter MAP assessment
In order to earn a high school credit for English 1, the student must have a cumulative B average in the course at the end of the school year. Students who do not have a B average will repeat the course in the ninth grade. Students and parents will sign a contract at the end of 7th grade when accepted into English 1 outlining these requirements. Students who successfully complete the course may be enrolled in English II or AP Seminar in high school. This will be determined by the student’s individual high school.
