Edythe J. Hayes Middle School recently hosted its 4th annual IMPACT Day, a powerful event dedicated to celebrating and learning about students with different abilities. The day was filled with meaningful activities designed to foster understanding, inclusion, and empathy among our Panther community.
Students had the opportunity to learn about autism and intellectual disabilities through engaging presentations and videos featuring some of their fellow students. These inspiring videos highlighted the unique talents of our students with different abilities and their ability to advocate for themselves.
One of the most impactful activities of the day was the opportunity for students to try communicating using a core board — a tool that supports nonverbal communication. This hands-on experience helped students better understand the challenges and strengths of their peers with communication differences.
The school library played a key role in promoting understanding by featuring a special collection of books highlighting characters with different abilities. These books provided students with valuable insights into the experiences of individuals with disabilities.
Peer tutors also shared their experiences working with students with different abilities, expressing how rewarding and meaningful these relationships have been. Their stories inspired many students to consider how they, too, can contribute to a more inclusive school environment.
A highlight of the day was the recognition of 16 students who were nominated for their exceptional work with students with different abilities. Three students, Wyatt Johnson, Sydney Suder and Karsyn Johnston, were honored as IMPACT Day winners for their outstanding and inspiring contributions to fostering inclusion and support within the school.
"IMPACT Day is one of the most important days of the year for our school community," said Kris Church, Associate Principal. "It’s a reminder of the strength that comes from diversity and the power of empathy and understanding. We are incredibly proud of all our students for embracing the spirit of IMPACT Day."
IMPACT Day continues to be a cornerstone of the Edythe J. Hayes culture, reinforcing the school’s commitment to inclusivity and empowering every student to reach their full potential.
