Hayes Students Build Empathy and Understanding During IMPACT Day

Hayes Students Build Empathy and Understanding During IMPACT Day

On Wednesday, April 22, Edythe J. Hayes Middle School held its annual IMPACT Day, a schoolwide initiative designed to promote empathy, awareness, and inclusivity among students. This year’s focus centered on ADHD and learning disabilities, providing students with opportunities to better understand how individuals may learn, think, and experience the world in different ways.

Through a structured presentation and guided classroom discussions, students explored key concepts related to attention, processing, and learning differences. The goal of the day was not only to build knowledge, but also to strengthen a culture of respect and support within the Hayes community.

A highlight of the day took place during lunch, when students and staff participated in signing a schoolwide “Pledge to Be Inclusive” poster displayed in the cafeteria. This collective commitment reinforced the importance of creating an environment where all students feel seen, valued, and supported.

Teachers reported meaningful engagement and reflection from students throughout the day. One teacher shared several student takeaways that captured the impact of the learning experience:

  • “Be patient, supportive, and respectful of others.”
  • “You never know what people are going through.”
  • “Understand that people process things differently.”
  • “Be comfortable being different from everybody.”
  • “Don’t judge or mock.”
  • “Be a friend.”

Some students also made personal connections to the content, recognizing their own learning differences and gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and others.

As part of IMPACT Day, students who consistently model inclusivity and support for their peers were recognized at each grade level. Congratulations to Max Middleton (6th grade), LaDaia Dishman (7th grade), and Bo Ramsey (8th grade). These students exemplify what it means to include and support all learners in the classroom, serving as strong role models for the Hayes community.

IMPACT Day continues to be an important part of the school’s commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive culture aligned with its vision of being a place where everyone belongs. By encouraging empathy, awareness, and student voice, Hayes is helping to prepare students not only for academic success, but also for meaningful relationships and responsible citizenship.
