What is the student council?

All students at E. J. Hayes are encouraged to join the Student Council! Make new friends while making a difference at your school by becoming a member. All you need to do to join is show up for our meetings.

When and where are the meetings?

All meetings will take place at 8 am in Mrs. Litteral’s room 1007 front portable.  The students meet the second Thursday of every month. The first meeting will be on Thursday, September 11, at 8 am.

What does the council do?

Members discuss ways to improve our school and our community. Ideas are then voted on and taken to the principal or site-based council for approval.

What does it mean to run for office?

Anyone who joins the Student Council may run for office. The candidates will run a campaign which includes creating a commercial which is uploaded to the school's website and putting up posters. The campaign runs for one week with the entire school voting. Campaigning will begin September 18th with election voting on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025.

What are the offices and what is required?

  • President: run the meetings and will need to present ideas to principals, PTSA, and site base council if necessary. The president will speak at the Veterans Day program.
  • Vice President: help run the meetings and present ideas. You will take part in Veterans Day by reading a poem.
  • Secretary: take notes of meetings and participate in Veterans Day assembly.

Activities

The Student Council comes up with ideas to promote culture and climate at Hayes. One activity that everyone looks forward to is our Red Ribbon Week competition, when grades compete against each other while promoting the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The Student Council comes up with the theme for the week for grades to decorate their hallways. The council also comes up with daily dress up days and students and teachers dress accordingly. Last year the council voted to do childhood games.  Be a leader and come be a part of the fun and join the Student Council.
